Respected Criminal Law Attorney Builds You a Strong Defense in Maryland

Professional defense lawyer strives to vindicate Maryland residents accused of misdemeanor and felony crimes

The moment you are arrested, the clock starts ticking. Any delay in seeking legal counsel will only hurt your defense. At The Law Office of Keith A. Showstack, P.C., I begin carefully investigating your case as soon as you hire me. Realizing that your reputation and freedom may be at risk, I scrutinize every piece of evidence, interview witnesses, and scour the alleged scene of the crime. Whether police arrest you for a robbery, theft, DUI, or drugs, I draw on a decade of legal experience to fight for you in court, hire expert witnesses to bolster your case, and protect your rights.

Recognizing the difference between misdemeanors and felonies

When it comes to state-level crimes, there are two classifications: misdemeanors and felonies. While misdemeanors are not as serious as felonies, they still carry life-changing consequences.

Depending on the charges against you, you may also have to pay fines and/or restitution. Further, regardless of whether the prosecution charges you with a misdemeanor or felony, if convicted, you will have a criminal record.

No matter what type of criminal charge you face, I provide you with aggressive representation. For over a decade, I have helped exonerate clients accused of many types of misdemeanor and felony offenses. After assessing the strengths and weaknesses of your case, I can determine the best course of action for you to take to preserve your future and freedom.

Building a drug crime defense

Drug crime penalties range in severity based on several factors, which generally include the type of drug, the quantity of the drug, if the drug is for personal use, and your criminal history. For example, possession of more than 10 grams of marijuana is punishable by up to 6 months in jail and up to $1,000 in fines. Change the drug to possession of cocaine and the penalty increases to one year and up to $25,000 in fines.

However, your drug case is not cut and dried. I can review your situation and determine if the police violated your constitutional rights. I can challenge the stop and/or search that yielded the drugs, determine if you were properly Mirandized, and construct a stalwart defense. With my help, you may be able to have the charges against you reduced or dismissed altogether.

Defending against a DUI/DWI

Given the immense public safety concern with impaired driving, law enforcement is aggressive when it comes to stopping anyone suspected of DUI/DWI in Maryland.

As soon as you contact my office, I assess your case and determine the best possible defense strategy, which may include:

  • Challenging the traffic stop
  • Questioning the accuracy of the field sobriety tests
  • Questioning the accuracy of the breathalyzer
  • Proving that you were not driving the vehicle
  • Other defenses

Although your first DUI is a misdemeanor, it is punishable by up to a year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. For subsequent DUI offenses, the penalties increase severely.

Seeking help for robbery and armed robbery charges

Robbery and armed robbery  is the most serious form of theft in Maryland and should not be confused with lesser offenses such as shoplifting. If convicted of basic robbery, you face up to 15 years in prison. If convicted of armed robbery, you face up to 20 years in prison.  However, if you use a gun to commit the crime or if you commit a carjacking, the penalties you face rise substantially and may involve statutory mandatory minimums.

As someone who has handled countless theft and robbery cases in Maryland, I know exactly what you are up against. Drawing on my vast experience in criminal law, I can help you defend against even the most serious robbery charges.
